Aim  : To test the presence of Sulphate ( SO42-)  in the given salt.

BARIUM CHLORIDE TEST :-
To the aqueous solution of the given salt, add a few drops of dil.HCl and add then BaCl2 solution.

White ppt. insoluble in conc.HCl is obtained.

 SO42- is confirmed.

LEAD ACETATE TEST :------Take salt solution in a test tube & add  Lead Acetate solution to it.

White ppt. soluble in excess of ammonium Acetate solution.

SO42-  is confirmed.


RESULT  : The given salt contains   Sulphite (SO42- )  in it .



REACTIONS INVOLVED  :---------

(i)   SO42- (aq) +  BaCl2   (aq)               ----------------🡪   BaSO4 (s)  + 2 Cl ( aq)
                                                                                            White ppt.

 (ii)  SO4 2- (aq) +  Pb ( CH3COO)2 (aq)   -------------🡪  PbSO4 (s) + 2CH 3COO - (aq)
                                                                                            White ppt.

AMMONIUM MOLYBDATE TEST :------

T o the aqueous solution of the given salt , add conc. HNO3  & excess of Ammonium molybdate solution and heat.





Canary yellow ppt. or colouration is obtained.





PO43- is confirmed.


RESULT  : The given salt contains Phosphate (PO43- )  in it .

REACTIONS INVOLVED  :--------

 PO43- (aq)   + 12 MoO42- + 24 H+----------------🡪   (NH4)3PO4.12MoO+  12 H2O(l)  
                                                                                            Ammonium 
                                                                                     Phosphomolybdate
                                                                                         ( canary yellow )
